15 Inexpensive Engagement Rings that don’t look cheap!

There is an old rule of thumb that a man should spend two or three months salary on an engagement ring. This means if you make $2,000 a month you should by a ring that costs $4,000 to $6,000. Sounds pretty simple right? But can I just ask one simple question.
Who on earth came up with that rule?
And, why on earth would you follow this made up rule? An engagement ring should be a symbol of commitment and love not a symbol of debt and outrageous markups. The 2-3 month salary rule seems to ignore the cost of living and amount of debt and student loans one may have. In fact one recent study found a correlation between engagement rings and divorce.
Will buying an inexpensive engagement ring help you stay together?
This sounds ridiculous but a study conducted Emory University in Atlanta showed that the higher the cost of the engagement ring, the shorter the marriage. That means those who spend $5,000 -$10,000 on an engagement ring were more likely to get divorced. Whereas those who purchased a more inexpensive engagement ring had longer more successful marriages. Those who spend a moderate amount of $500-$2,000 on an engagement ring are 1.3 times less likely to get divorced. Now, it’s a silly study with an interesting link between cost and divorce, this of course is not necessarily the cause. But staying within budget is just good sense!
I have a Confession to make
Confession… (whispers) we bought our rings on Amazon.com…No really, we did! My husband bought my engagement ring for $15.00 on Amazon… true story. (He later exchanged it for a family stone he put in a new setting that had a lot of sentimental value for me, spending about $600. This was a perfect surprise:) Then we bought my husbands ring on Amazon for $25.00 and he loves it! We ordered a few and choose a Cobalt Chrome ring that cost $25.00.Another couple told me they bought a similar ring for $500.00! Honestly, it is amazing how much the rings are over priced in stores.
Buying rings online sounds so unromantic but my husband was just finishing law school with a TON of debt and adding a few thousand more on a ring that we couldn’t really afford was just plain dumb! Just like everyone else I had a secret pinterest board dedicated to the most gorgeous rings known to man. (I still add to it… because well a girl can dream 🙂 But when I compared the cost of diamonds to some of the more unique but equally gorgeous stones like aquamarines, morganite, and tanzanite; I couldn’t believe how much more diamonds cost!
Truth is you can get so much more ring for you money, if you think outside of the “diamond box”. Check out these gorgeous stones that don’t cost anywhere close to a diamond of equal size.
