You don’t have to be a florist to arrange a gorgeous bouquet. This is great news for the bide on a budget! My husband and I were planning a wedding on tight budget knowing that we would soon be paying off some hefty law school debt. I wanted what I thought was a simple bouquet. After I priced it out at several floral shops I was in shock that my dream bridal bouquet was quoted $250-300 minimum! Later, I was also quoted $35.00 for a basic bridesmaid bouquet made only out of baby’s-breath! I couldn’t believe it!

I personally had a friend do this for me but was able to buy flowers in bulk from costco.com online. If you don’t have a crafty friend you can turn into a fun activity with your bridesmaids the day before the big day. First, you will just need to order a few basic floral supplies online. Next, take a quick trip to your local grocery store the day before the big day to pick out the freshest flowers. I recommend getting flowers from Trader Joes or Costco. Take a look at their selection a few days before hand so you can have an idea of what flowers are in season.

No need to spend thousands on flowers that you won’t get to enjoy more than one day! Just plan ahead and order a few necessary supplies then stop by your local grocery store and pick out your favorite flowers!

Wedding Organization Tips

  1. Buy the Supplies Now: Order your supplies early and store in a box for the big day. Otherwise you will find yourself running around needlessly.
  2. Plan Ahead: A few weeks before your wedding day check out which flowers are in season at your local grocery store
  3. Put it on the calendar: If you are going to make flowers the day before hand make sure it is on the calendar or you will be doing it at midnight!

Your Own Bridal Bouquet in 4 Easy Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Flowers for the Bouquet: The Boring Part

  • Remove any excess leaves or thorns on each stem with a stem stripper or knife. Examine each flower and remove any damaged petals.
  • While holding the stems underwater use a stem cutter to cut the stems at an angle to prolong life. Cut each stem about 2 inches from the bottom.
    • TIP: Keep the stems long while first working with them and then trim them shorter once you completed the bouquet.
  • Store prepared stems in a bucket of water while continuing to cut and prepare additional flowers.

Step 2: Arrange the Flowers: Make it Look Pretty!

  • START WITH THE CENTER: Hold four flowers in a square shape at an even height. This will be the center of the bridal bouquet.
  • ADD FLOWERS ONE BY ONE: Arrange flowers one by one going around the center in a clockwise fashion. Lower the height of each flower slightly to create a dome look.

Step 3: Bind the Bouquet: Make it Look Fancy!

  • Once you have arranged the flowers just the way you like it, STOP! At some point you just have to tell yourself to stop or you could keep making minor adjustments all night.
  • Using Green Floral tape bind the bunch where all the stems naturally join. This is normally about 3 to 4 inches below the flower heads.
  • Continue to bind the flowers towards the end of the stem leaving about 3 inches unbound.
  • Trim the flowers so they are all the same length (generally 7-8 inches long).
  • Measure the ribbon to about 3 times the length of the stem and cut.
  • Using ribbon color of choice, tuck the end of the ribbon inside the green floral tape. the start wrapping does the length of the stem. Once the end of the green floral tape is reached, start spiraling back up the stem.
  • Secure the ribbon with a couple of pearl floral push pins.
  • For a bow, cut an additional ribbon and tie it just below the flower heads.

Step 4: Make it Last!

  • I would not recommend making the arrangement much more than a day before hand.
  • Store the bouquet in a refrigerator until you are ready to leave to the ceremony.
  • TIP: Have someone not in the wedding ceremony be in charge of flower transportation. More times than not flowers are forgotten or are picked up late because someone takes took long to get their hair done!

Option 2: Handle Bouquet (great for bridesmaids)

The is a great option for someone who is a bit nervous to DIY her bridal bouquet. You won’t have to worry about binding the flowers or striping thorns. Instead of binding flowers you simply be arranging  trimmed flowers in a ready to go bouquet. Also, you will have to worry less about making sure the flowers are kept in water as they will receive it from the green floral foam.

  1. I love DIY and this is a great post! I made my own wedding flowers, bouquets and decorations as well. It so much fun to add a personal touch to a special day and at the same time save money too.

  2. This is so great! I’ve had some friends do this and had beautiful results. I know that trader joe’s will let you call and special order flowers if they’re in season – so helpful for wedding flowers!

  3. That’s a pretty cool idea about making the bouquets with flowers from the grocery stores. I really like doing this for special occasions at Central Market.

  4. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, it looks gorgeous 🙂 I sometimes get so stuck with watching all the beautiful flowers, it’s so addictive 😀
